γ-Fe2O3-CdS nanocomposites have been prepared by a single step thermal decomposition method which involves thermal decomposition of iron acetylacetonate, cadmium acetate and thiourea in diphenyl ether at 200 ^°C. The nanocomposites were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, atomic absorption spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy, surface area measurements, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. The effect of varying concentration of iron acetylacetonate, cadmium acetate and thiourea during synthesis of the nanocomposites on the crystal phases, microstructure and properties of the nanocomposites was investigated. The XRD results confirm the presence of CdS nanocrystals (1.2 to 2.9 nm) in the γ-Fe2O3-CdS nanocomposites and the nanocomposites exhibit superparamagnetic behaviour at room temperature. The nanocomposites show good absorption in visible region (1.8 eV to 2.5 eV) and they exhibit visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of congo red in an aqueous solution with good stability.
