The reaction of gaseous AlCl//3 with oxygen containing 2-5 vol% H//2O in the temperature range of 200 to 1000 degree C, and the thermal transitions of the Al//2O//3 formed under various conditions were examined. At 200 degree C, only the reaction of gaseous AlCl//3 with H//2O occurs, regardless of the H//2O content in oxygen. Above about 400 degree C, the reactions of gaseous AlCl//3 with both H//2O and oxygen occur, and all the AlCl//3 reacts at 1000 degree C. The reaction with H//2O mainly occurs below about 900 degree C, and the reaction with oxygen mainly occurs at 1000 degree C. Regardless of the H//2O content in oxygen, the reaction product is amorphous Al//2O//3 below 600 degree C, amorphous Al//2O//3 containing poorly crystallized gamma -Al//2O//3 at 800 degree C, gamma -Al//2O//3 containing amorphous Al//2O//3 at 900 degree C, and a mixture of gamma -Al//2O//3 and delta -Al//2O//3 at 1000 degree C.
