Scheme 1 The synthetic route to 4-chloro-2,6-bis[(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)methyl]phenol.
Synthesis: 4‑Chloro‑2,6‑bis[(3,5‑dimethyl‑1H‑pyrazol‑1‑ylmethyl)]
phenol was synthesised by two steps as shown in Scheme 1.
p‑Chlorophenol (19.2 g, 0.15 mol) was added to a solution of NaOH

(6 g, 0.15 mol) dissolved in water (20 mL). The mixture was stirred
while paraformaldehyde (9 g, 0.3 mol) was added. The reaction
mixtures were heated at 328 K for 45 min with continuous stirring
and allowed to stand for a while at room temperature. The yellow
solid was collected by vacuum filtration and washed with water‑
saturated sodium chloride. The collected yellow granule was
further dissolved in hot water and the pH was adjusted to 1~2 with
concentrated hydrochloric acid, the crystalline solid of 4‑chloro‑2,6‑
bis(hydroxymethyl)phenol was isolated.

1,4‑dioxane (20 mL) was stirred and refluxed for 2 hours. After
11
removal of 1,4‑dioxane under reduced pressure, the resulting
mixture was stirred for another 3 h at 130–140 °C. The agglomerating
mixtures were dissolved in ethanol and then poured into water. The
faint yellow solid was collected and recrystallised from isopropyl
alcohol. Colourless block crystals suitable for single‑crystal X‑ray
diffraction analysis were obtained after 2 weeks. The yield is 76%
