Synthesis of substituted dicyanomethylendihydrofurans

A simple and efficient method for the preparation of the title compounds is described from α-ketols and malononitrile in the presence of sodium ethylate at room temperature. These compounds lead to unsaturated derivatives by condensation with aldehydes.
