were obtained.
Synthesis of [(thf)2K{Dipp-N=C(tBu)-N(H)}] (4b): method 1: A so-
lution of 1 (295 mg, 0.8 mmol) in THF (5 mL) was added to a sus-
pension of KH (53 mg, 1.3 mmol) in THF (10 mL) at RT, and the re-
action mixture was stirred at RT for 24 h. Thereafter, the mixture
was filtered and all volatiles were removed in vacuo. 110 mg of 4b
(31%) were isolated pale as yellow crystals after recrystallization
from THF and dried in vacuo (which removes ligated ether).
method 2: A solution of 1 (366 mg, 1.0 mmol) in toluene (7.5 mL)
was added to a solution of KN(SiMe3)2 (199 mg, 1.0 mmol) in tolu-
ene (7.5 mL) at RT and the reaction mixture was stirred at RT for
72 h. During this time, formation of a pale orange solid was ob-
served. This precipitate was collected by filtration, consisting of the
solvent-free potassium salt (176 mg, 0.59 mmol, 59%). Recrystalli-
zation of the solid from 0.3 mL THF and storage at 58C gave 4b as
pale yellow crystals. M.p. 122–1278C (dec.); 1H NMR (400.13 MHz,
C6D6, 297.1 K): d 7.14 (m, 1H, Dipp p-CH), 7.06 (m, 2H, Dipp m-CH),
Synthesis of [Mg{Dipp-N=C(tBu)-N-C2H4-Py}2] (3): To a solution of
amidine 1 (366 mg, 1.0 mmol) in n-pentane (10 mL) was added
1.1 mL of a 1m Mg(nBu)2 solution in n-heptane at 08C and this re-
action mixture was stirred at RT for 24 h. During this time, forma-
tion of a pale yellow solid was observed. Toluene was added suc-
cessively to get a clear solution, and after several days, 234 mg of
3 (31%) were isolated. M.p.>3508C; 1H NMR (400.13 MHz, C6D6,

Synthesis of Dipp-N=C(tBu)-NH2 (5): In order to obtain the hydro-
lysis product, 8 mL of the reaction mixture of 2a including amidine
1 (200 mg, 0.5 mmol) and NaN(SiMe3)2 (100 mg, 0.5 mmol) in THF
was treated with water (4 mL) and extracted with toluene (4 mL).
The organic layer was collected and after removal of the solvent,
the precipitate was recrystallized from n-pentane yielding 100 mg
Synthesis of [(thf)2Na{Dipp-N=C(tBu)-N(H)}] (4a): A solution of
1 (291 mg, 0.8 mmol) in THF (4 mL) was added to a solution of
NaN(SiMe3)2 (160 mg, 0.9 mmol) in THF (5 mL) at RT and the reac-
tion mixture was stirred at RT for 24 h. Thereafter, all volatiles were
removed in vacuo and 107 mg of 4a (31%) were isolated as yellow
crystals after recrystallization from THF and dried in vacuo (which
removes ligated ether). M.p. 145–1478C (dec.); 1H NMR
