Our next target is to examine the dopant structure and 16
aggregation in a BP based on Raman spectroscopy. For the
purpose, we are now attempting to widen the BP temperature
range by modifying the molecular structure of Rutrop-1 and/or 17
examining the combination with other nematic liquid crystals.
In conclusion, a new ruthenium complex Rutrop-1 was 18
found to work as a chiral dopant with high HTPs, miscibility,
and strong Raman scattering. Raman measurements of a 19
binary mixture of Rutrop-1 and nematics with various dopant
concentrations strongly suggested the uniform dispersion of 20
the dopants in N* media. Rutrop-1 was also found to induce a
BP in 5CB and MBBA. Rutrop-1 has promising applications as a 21
molecular probe with Raman spectroscopy for investigating
the role of dopants in chiral nematic and blue phases.
