Treatment of alkyl chrysanthemate with Lewis acid leads to C₃ epimerization, while protonic acid treatment gives rise to selective C₂-C₃ bond cleavage.The latter method is succesfully applied to the synthesis of optically active tetrahydrolavandulol.
