A study of the pseudomorphic transformation of the VOHPO4·0.5H2O precursor (P/V=1) to (VO)2P2O7catalyst is reported. Attention is paid to the nucleation and growth stages, which are discussed in connection with the concept of topotaxy. The transformation mechanism which accounts for the textural change is established using electron microscopy techniques and X-ray diffraction. The morphology change to a prismatic shape at high temperature, approximately 870°C, is also discussed.
