IV. CONCLUSIONS

We have performed Monte Carlo simulations to examine
the conformation, adsorption conditions, and kinetics of a
uniformly charged polyelectrolyte adsorbing onto heteroge-
neously charged surfaces. A heterogeneously charged sur-
face can create a complicated potential field above the sur-
face. Under the influence of this field, the polyelectrolyte
seeks out the area of lower potential. The region to which the
polymer adsorbs consistently is more attractive than the sur-
face as a whole so that adsorption occurs even between simi-
larly charged objects. Our calculations offer a strategy to
determine the charge heterogeneity on surface using a poly-
electrolyte chain as a probe, for example ͓by attaching it to
an atomic force microscopy ͑AFM͒ tip͔. The additional

effects of chain stiffness, heterogeneities in the distribution
of charges on the polymer, and competitive adsorption by
several polyelectrolyte chains need to be addressed in these
simulations in order to facilitate a comparison with experi-
mental results.
