In extrapolating from this pot study to vineyard situa-
tions, we offer the following comments. Although our
vines showed a moderate vine capacity (estimated from
total LA levels) and crop load, the vigour of individual
untrimmed shoots was fairly high and the amount of
lateral regrowth induced by the T6 treatment was com-
patible with that of high vigour sites. Furthermore, the
range of leaf-to-fruit ratio was either representative of
situations of an excessive or too limited source (untrim-
med and T6LX, respectively) with a range of intermediate
levels.
Our data indicate that an early trimming that pre-
serves at least 12 main leaves is a ‘safe’ and advisable
choice in vigorous Cabernet Sauvignon grapevines. This
trimming severity would have the advantage of ensuring
a sufficient amount of source foliage for crop ripening
even if followed by weak or even no lateral regrowth (a
case which may occur when dry weather follows trim-
ming). A more severe trimming should be performed,
especially in very vigorous sites, only when strictly nec-
essary, since it may cause too vigorous a lateral regrowth
with growing tips on the vine well beyond veraison. On
the other hand, a severe cut may also lead to excessive
source limitation in dry seasons and/or excessive crop
load.
