grinding and polishing of the sample. The cross-sectioned mor-
phologies were definitely affected by the sample preparation be-
cause both Al and Cu are relatively soft metals.
Conclusion
Al was electrodeposited from a solution of AlCl3–͓P14,6,6,6͔Cl
͑XAlCl = 0.67͒. High current efficiencies were obtained, and it is
3
believed that with careful purification and control of the environ-
ment current efficiencies approaching 100% should be possible. The
power consumption required to electrodeposit Al from this system
was low; however, the power requirements will increase signifi-
cantly with increased anode-cathode spacing as the resistance due to
the solution is high due to its low conductivity. Although the lower
cost of the phosphonium ILs is an advantage compared to imidazo-
lium ILs, the effects of its lower conductivity must be carefully
considered.
