Tetrachlorosilane Specification

The Tetrachlorosilane , with CAS registry number of 10026-04-7,  is also known as Siliconchloride. What's more, Its systematic name is Tetrachlorosilane. Its EINECS registry number is 233-054-0. In addition, the formula is Cl4Si and the molecular weight is 169.89. This Tetrachlorosilane is a colourless or light yellow fuming liquid and it reacts violently with water. Besides, it is incompatible with water, acids, bases, alcohols, alkali metals, organics, powdered metals. It is stable at normal temperature and pressure, and it should be sealed in ventilated, cool, dry place away from fire. Tetrachlorosilane is used for the preparation of organic silicon, silicic acid ester, organic silicon oil, high temperature insulation, silicone, silicone rubber. What's more, it also can be used to absorb moisture and create a smokescreen agent.

Physical properties about Tetrachlorosilane are: (1)ACD/LogP: 2.37; (2)ACD/LogD (pH 5.5): 2.365; (3)ACD/LogD (pH 7.4): 2.365; (4)ACD/BCF (pH 5.5): 36.927; (5)ACD/BCF (pH 7.4): 36.927; (6)Index of Refraction: 1.462; (7)Molar Refractivity: 30.163 cm3; (8)Molar Volume: 109.811 cm3; (9)Surface Tension: 24.811 dyne/cm; (10)Density: 1.547 g/cm3; (11)Enthalpy of Vaporization: 28.7 kJ/mol; (12)Boiling Point: 57.57 °C at 760 mmHg; (13)Vapour Pressure: 229.706 mmHg at 25 °C.

Preparation of Tetrachlorosilane. Firstly, ferrosilicon is added into chlorination furnace and heated to 300 °C. Crude silicon tetrachloride is obtained by condensation after chlorine is passed into mixture to react. Secondly, crude product is mixed with antimony powder for distillation for 30 minutes. At last, industrial grade product is obtained by collecting the distillate at the temperature of 56-59 °C and high-purity product can be generated by further distillation.

Si + 2 C12 → SiCl4

When you are using Tetrachlorosilane, please be cautious about it. As a chemical, it is irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. It also is harmful by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed. Through it has limited evidence of a carcinogenic effect, it has risk of serious damage to eyes. Furthermore, it causes burns. During using it, wear suitable protective clothing, gloves and eye/face protection. After contact with skin, wash immediately. If contact with eyes accidently, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. In case of accident or if you feel unwell seek medical advice immediately. After using it, take off immediately all contaminated clothing and keep container tightly closed and dry.
