Acidic Conditions

Acid-catalyzed ester hydrolysis is faster and occurs even at room temperature. The reaction involves the protonation of the ester oxygen, making it more susceptible to nucleophilic attack by water. This forms a tetrahedral intermediate, which is eventually converted into a carboxylic acid and an alcohol.
