Ammonium sulfate is an inorganic compound with the formula (NH4)2SO4. The substance is white odorless solid which is soluble in water but insoluble in acetone, alcohol and ether. In addition, it is incompatible with strong bases. What's more, it will sink and dissolve in water with evolution of some heat. Whan contact with strong oxidizers, it may cause fire or explosion. With the CAS registry number 7783-20-2, its systematic name is called sulfuric acid diammoniate. It will melt at 235-280 °C.
Physical properties about Ammonium sulfate are: (1)ACD/LogP: -1.031; (2)ACD/LogD (pH 5.5): -5.53; (3)ACD/LogD (pH 7.4): -5.53; (4)ACD/BCF (pH 5.5): 1.00; (5)ACD/BCF (pH 7.4): 1.00; (6)#H bond acceptors: 4; (7)#H bond donors: 2; (8)Enthalpy of Vaporization: 62.94 kJ/mol; (9)Boiling Point: 330 °C at 760 mmHg; (10)Vapour Pressure: 3.35E-05 mmHg at 25°C
Preparation of Ammonium sulfate:
Ammonium sulfate can be prepared by ammonium hydroxide and sulphuric acid. This is a kind of neutralization reaction. After crystallization, centrifugal separation and dry, you will gain it. Ammonium sulfate can be made by reacting synthetic ammonia with sulfuric acid which is a kind of acid-base reaction:
2 NH3 + H2SO4 → (NH4)2SO4
Ammonium sulfate is also manufactured from gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O). Finally divided gypsum is added to an ammonium carbonate solution. Calcium carbonate precipitates out, leaving ammonium sulfate in the solution.
(NH4)2CO3 + CaSO4 → (NH4)2SO4 + CaCO3
Uses of Ammonium sulfate: It contains 21% nitrogen as ammonium cations, and 24% sulfur as sulfate anions. In fertilizer the purpose of the sulfate is to reduce the soil pH. It is used largely as an artificial fertilizer for alkaline soils. It is also used as an agricultural spray adjuvant for water soluble insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. It is also used in the preparation of other ammonium salts. It has also been used in flame retardant compositions acting much like Diammonium phosphate.
When you are using Ammonium sulfate, please be cautious about it as the following:
(1)Wear suitable gloves and eye/face protection;
(2)In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice;
(3)Wear suitable protective clothing;
You can still convert the following datas into molecular structure:
