The present invention provides a process for synthesis of tri- and tetra-alkylated pyridines (i.e. collidines) in high yields by reacting methyl ethyl ketone with formaldehyde in presence of ammonia in gas phase in the presence of a zeolite catalyst which comprises of silica-alumina with atleast one metal ion and/or metal selected from the group consisting of lanthanum, lead, manganese, iron, copper and cobalt. This process provides eco-friendly, more economical and shape-selective heterogeneous method.

The kinetics of the forward and reverse reactions [AuBr4]- + am = [AuBr3(am)] + Br- has been studied in 95/5 vol % methanol/water mixtures at 25.0°C for am = pyridine and a variety of substituted pyridines. When there is methyl substitution on both the 2- and 6-positions, the low stability of the amine complexes precludes a study of the kinetics of their formation. However, they can be prepared and the kinetics of their decomposition are reported. The second-order rate constants for the forward and reverse reactions depend upon the amine basicity and take the form log kf2 = a(pKa) + b and log kr2 = -a(pKa) + b′ where a and a′ are independent of the extent of ortho substitution in the ligand. In contrast to the case for the chloro analogues, the reactions in both directions are retarded by 2(6)-methyl substituents in the pyridine ring, manifested by a change in b and b′.

The catalytic activity of cyclopentadienylcobalt increases greatly upon introducing a methoxycarbonyl group into the cyclopentadienyl ring, and by carrying out the reaction with a rigorous exclusion of oxygen.Among the precursors we have examined, the most active one was z)(cot)> (Cpz = methoxycarbonyl-substituted cyclopentadienyl; cot = cyclooctatetraene) which can generate the active species at 100 deg C.

The acylation (acetylation, propionylation, isobutyrylation) of isopropyl chloride has been performed under Friedel-Crafts conditions (AlCl3).For the first time, products resulting from triacylation and tetraacylation have been obtained.Treatment with liquid ammonia affords the title compounds.Thus, sophisticated products are obtained readily from very cheap starting materials.
