Cooperative catalysis of molybdenum with organocatalysts for distribution of products between amines and imines

, (2021/02/02)
Multi-amino groups and nitrogen donors compound was discovered as an organocatalyst for N-alkylation of alcohols with amines in the presence of Mo(CO)6. The Mo(CO)6/organocatalyst binary system has shown to be a highly active catalyst for the N-alkylation reaction between alcohols and amines with excellent tolerance of variable starting materials bearing different functional groups. Of particular note, this method possessing a superiority selectivity in the synthesis of N-alkylated amines or imines, which can be controlled by the reaction temperature. The cooperative catalysis mechanism in combination of Mo(CO)6 with organocatalyst was elucidated by control experiments.
1,2-Disubstituted Benzimidazoles by the Iron Catalyzed Cross-Dehydrogenative Coupling of Isomeric o-Phenylenediamine Substrates

, p. 1991 - 2009 (2020/03/13)
Benzimidazoles are common in nature, medicines, and materials. Numerous strategies for preparing 2-arylbenzimidazoles exist. In this work, 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles were prepared from various mono- and disubstituted ortho-phenylenediamines (OPD) by iron-catalyzed oxidative coupling. Specifically, O2 and FeCl3·6H2O catalyzed the cross-dehydrogenative coupling and aromatization of diarylmethyl and dialkyl benzimidazole precursors. N,N′-Disubstituted-OPD substrates were significantly more reactive than their N,N-disubstituted isomers, which appears to be relative to their propensity for complexation and charge transfer with Fe3+. The reaction also converted N-monosubstituted OPD substrates to 2-substituted benzimidazoles; however, electron-poor substrates produce 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles by intermolecular imino-transfer. Kinetic, reagent, and spectroscopic (UV-vis and EPR) studies suggest a mechanism involving metal-substrate complexation, charge transfer, and aerobic turnover, involving high-valent Fe(IV) intermediates. Overall, comparative strategies for the relatively sustainable and efficient synthesis of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles are demonstrated.

, p. 1835 - 1847 (2020/01/31)
Both imidazol-2-ylidene (ImNHC) and 1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene (tzNHC) have evolved to be elite groups of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands for homogeneous catalysis. To develop efficient ruthenium(II)-based catalysts incorporating these ligands for C-N bond-forming reactions via hydrogen-borrowing methodology, we utilized chelating ligands integrated with ImNHC and mesoionic tzNHC donors connected via a CH2 spacer with a diverse triazole backbone. The synthesized ruthenium(II) complexes 3 are found to be highly efficient for C-N bond formation across a wide range of primary amine and alcohol substrates under solvent-free conditions, and among all of the complexes studied here, catalyst 3a with a mesityl substituent displayed maximum activity. To our delight, catalyst 3a is also effective for the selective mono-N-methylation of various anilines utilizing methanol as a coupling partner, known to be relatively more difficult than other alcohols. Furthermore, complex 3a also delivers various substituted quinolines successfully via the reaction of 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with several secondary alcohols. Importantly, catalyst 3a exhibited the highest activity among the reported ruthenium(II) complexes for both the N-benzylation of aniline [achieving a turnover number (TON) of 50000] and the realization of quinoline 8a by reacting 2-aminobenzyl alcohol with 2-phenylethanol (attaining a TON of 30000).

supporting information, p. 21382 - 21386 (2020/09/21)
Analytical methods that allow simultaneous determination of the concentration and enantiomeric composition of small sample amounts and are also compatible with high-throughput multi-well plate technology have received increasing attention in recent years. We now introduce a new class of broadly useful small-molecule probes and a relay sensing strategy that together accomplish these tasks with five classes of compounds including the challenging group of mono-alcohols—a scope that stands out among previously reported UV, fluorescence, and CD assays. Several chlorophosphite probes and aniline indicators have been evaluated and used for on-the-fly CD/UV sensing following a continuous workflow. The wide application range of the readily available sensors is highlighted with almost 30 alcohols, diols, hydroxy acids, amines and amino alcohols, and the accuracy of the stereochemical analysis is showcased with samples covering a wide range of concentrations and enantiomeric ratios.

Feng, Yangyang,Ma, Youcai,Xiong, Ruimei,Xiong, Yan,Zhang, Xiaohui
supporting information, (2020/09/02)
The synthetic methodology of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles has been developed, which starts from N,N′-dialkyl o-phenylenediamines via intramolecular dehydrogenative coupling under the oxidation of DDQ with mild conditions. Through detailed optimization of reaction conditions, only DDQ was found essential without any additives to reach to the highest yield of 99%. In the cases of linear aliphatic substituents, the synthesis of 1-alkyl-2-phenylbenzimidazoles showed high selectivities and their structures were identified by 2D NMR COSY correlation analysis. A plausible mechanism was proposed to interpret the observed reactivities and selectivities.

, (2019/09/03)
A series of new benzimidazolium chlorides bearing N,N′-benzyl, 2,4,6-trimethylbenzyl and 2,4,6-triisopropylbenzyl substituents have been designed and synthesized from various o-phenylenediamines. Subsequently, corresponding Cu-based N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) were generated in situ in the reaction medium which represents a new application of NHCs exploiting distinct catalytic property towards intermolecular cyclization reaction cascade for the synthesis of 2-aryl-3-(arylethynyl)quinoxalines from o-phenylenediamines and terminal alkynes. The outcome of the cyclization reaction product depends upon the N,N′-substituents present on the benzimidazolium chlorides.
Borrowing Hydrogen-Mediated N-Alkylation Reactions by a Well-Defined Homogeneous Nickel Catalyst
Bains, Amreen K.,Kundu, Abhishek,Yadav, Sudha,Adhikari, Debashis
, p. 9051 - 9059 (2019/10/02)
We report herein a well-defined and bench-stable azo-phenolate ligand-coordinated nickel catalyst which can efficiently execute N-alkylation of a variety of anilines by alcohol. We demonstrate that the redox-active azo ligand can store hydrogen generated during alcohol oxidation and redelivers the same to an in-situ-generated imine bond to result in N-alkylation of amines. The reaction has wide scope, and a large array of alcohols can directly couple to a variety of anilines. Mechanistic studies including deuterium labeling to the substrate establishes the borrowing hydrogen method from alcohols and pinpoints the crucial role of the redox-active azo moiety present on the ligand backbone. Isolation of the ketyl intermediate in its trapped form with a radical quencher and higher kH/kD for the alcohol oxidation step suggest altogether a hydrogen-atom transfer (HAT) to the reduced azo backbone to pave alcohol oxidation as opposed to the conventional metal-ligand bifunctional mechanism. This example clearly demonstrates that an inexpensive base metal catalyst can accomplish an important coupling reaction with the help of a redox-active ligand backbone.
