New palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes with didentate ligands derived from 1-phenylazo-2-naphthylamine and 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde or 2-(tert-butylthio)benzaldehyde have been prepared and their structures are determined by X-ray crystallography. The palladium(II) and platinum(II) complexes containing a phosphorus donor atom ([MCl2(L1)] (M=Pd2+ (1), Pt2+ (2))) are mononuclear, whereas the complex containing a sulfur donor atom ([PdCl(L2)]3 (3)) has a trinuclear structure. The three palladium atoms of complex 3 are bound to each other through bridging sulfur (thiolato) donor atoms and a six-membered ring (Pd3S3) is formed. Complex 3 reacts with potassium iodide in acetonitrile to yield a dinuclear complex, [PdI(L2)]2 (4), which has a bent structure. The short PdPd distance (2.8855(7) Å) of complex 4 suggests a PdPd bonding interaction. The coordinated ligands (L1 and L2) contain a six-membered heterocyclic ring, whose bond and electronic structures are also discussed.
