Studies on the rapid analysis of drugs in human body fluids and tissues I action of concentrated sulphuric acid on 5,5-disubstituted barbituric acid derivatives

The ultraviolet spectra and some other properties of products obtained by the action, on some commonly used barbituric acid derivatives, of different strengths of sulphuric acid at 100° have been studied. In this work the products examined included those which are not extracted into ether from acidic solution. The length of the time of heating was varied and the results suggested that a partial characterisation of 5,5 barbituric acid derivatives could be achieved by a procedure requiring 3 min heating of derivatives with 95% sulphuric acid. This procedure has been shown to produce satisfactory results with extracts from blood containing various mixtures of barbiturates.
