The response of chicory root tissue disks to treatment with 2,4- and 3,5-dichlorophenoxy-acetic acids

Treatment of tissue disks from chicory root with 10−5 M solutions of the highly active plant growth regulator 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-d) results in a very large water uptake. This is accompanied by extensive hydrolysis of oligosaccharides and a very marked increase in hydrolase and invertase activity. These effects are not obtained when the inactive growth regulator (3,5-d) is used. The results are discussed and compared with those already reported for tissue from the tubers of Jerusalem artichoke.2
