Infrared studies of exchange and pyrolysis reactions in mixtures of trimethylamine alane and triethylgallium

Mixtures of trimethylamine alane and triethylgallium in the gas phase have been shown by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to undergo rapid alkyl/hydride exchange reactions. During infrared laser powered homogeneous pyrolysis, β-elimination is favoured over metal-hydrogen bond homolysis as the low energy process. Many of the ethyl species are considerably less volatile than the methyl analogues. These observations are compared with the results of recent studies of the deposition of AlxGa1−xAs using these precursors.
