One mole of 4-chloro-3,4-dimethyl-2-pentanone was acetylated with two moles labeled acetyl chloride or acetic anhydride of specific activity a in the presence of aluminium chloride or zinc chloride, respectively. The 2,3,4,6-tetramethylpyrylium salt formed in the latter case has a specific activity a, as expected, but the 2,6-dimethyl-4-ethylpyrylium salt formed in the former case has a specific activity of 1.33a, therefore in the presence of aluminium chloride the acylation of olefins to β-chloroketones is reversible.
