5-(8-hydroxy-5-quinolylmethyl)-8-hydroxy-1-methylquinolinium salts as solvatochromic chelating agents

The title compounds and related substances were prepared, characterised and tested as solvatochromic chelating agents. These reagents show large color changes with solvent, and the chelates, though insoluble in most common solvents, are also solvatochromic. Reagents with a 2-methyl group adjacent to the chelating centre do not precipitate aluminium, and this effect can be used as a colour test for aluminium.
