Vibrational spectra of cis-1,1-dihalo-2,3-dimethylcyclopropanes

The infrared spectra of cis-1,1-dichloro-2,3-dimethylcyclopropane and cis-1,1-dibromo-2,3-dimethylcyclopropane as liquids have been measured. The infrared spectrum of cis-1,1-dichloro-2,3-dimethylcyclopropane as a polycrystalline solid was also recorded from 4000 to 400 cm−1. Raman spectra of the two compounds in the liquid phase have been obtained as well. An assignment of the vibrational frequencies has been proposed and discussed. By comparing the frequencies of selected normal modes with those of related molecules, evidence is obtained for the interaction of the substituents in cis position on the cyclopropane ring.
