Dye diffusion in color paste plays a crucial role in textile printing. This work is to explore different influences of process parameters on the apparent diffusion of an acid dye (C.I. Acid Blue 7) in sodium alginate paste at the first time, with a novel and specially developed method by employing a specially self-designed and built cell. Moreover, the approximately apparent diffusion rate of the acid dye was also determined by the proposed method in convenient and operable experiments at different conditions in the paste. The results reveal that the proposed method was feasible and powerful to experimentally investigate the apparent diffusion of the acid dye and its various parameter influences in the paste. Notable influences from media temperature and the employed additives on the apparent diffusion of the acid dye were observed in the paste. The approximately apparent diffusion rate of the acid dye increased significantly with the temperature from 348.15 K to 371.15 K, as well as for the addition of glycerol from 0.5% to 5.0%. However, notable decrease in the apparent diffusion rate was also encountered with the dosage of sodium alginate thickener from 4.0% to 9.0%, as well as for the application of the additives of carbamide from 2.0% to 7.0% and ammonium sulfate from 1.0% to 3.5% in the paste. It is most important that a power function model was successfully supposed, validated and employed by all the experimental data correlation to characterize and compare the various influences of the employed process parameters on the apparent diffusion of the acid dye in the paste. The achieved results are helpful and potentially benefit for a process design and control in textile printing with efficient application of chemicals and dyes for a cleaner production in practice.
