The unusual annealing of neutron-irradiated selenites

Radiative thermal neutron capture by an atom combined in an anionic species very seldom leads to an oxidised radioactive product. The products formed in irradiated hydrated or anhydrous sodium selenite comprise radioactive elemental selenium, selenite and selenate. Equally surprising, on thermal annealing, the proportion of zero-valent selenium decreases and that of selenate increases, while selenite is not much changed. Possible explanations of this unusual behaviour are discussed.
