Polyhedra have been formed by dissolution of single-crystal spheres of gadolinium gallium garnet in a PbO/B2O3 flux at about 1000°C. The curved segments between the edges of the dissolution form show {210} and {331} orientations. Their formation is discussed in terms of a model which takes into account different velocities of retreat of steps of low-index equilibrium form faces during dissolution. Contrary to the above findings, yttrium iron garnet spheres do not exhibit dissolution form polyhedra but maintain their spherical shape.
