Lanthanide reduction in the novel preparation of samarium doped strontium and barium sodium nonaborates

Samarium doped BaNaB9O15 and SrNaB9O15 were prepared from 5% samarium:95% alkaline earth metal co-precipitated borates. Sodium tetraborate and boric acid were ground with the precipitates, then the composites were wetted with glacial acetic acid and fired in air. The formation of the BaNaB9O15 and SrNaB9O15 matrices were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. The reduction of samarium in both materials was identified via divalent samarium emission spectroscopy. The emission features exhibited by Sm+2:SrNaB9O15 and Sm+2:BaNaB9O15 are presented and discussed.
