Glyphosate Effects on the Biosynthesis of Flavonoids from Exogenous L-Phenylalanine and L-Tyrosine in Buckwheat Cotyledons

SummaryUsing excised buckwheat cotyledons treated with glyphosate to block endogenous supply of aromatic amino acids a comparison of the precursor role of exogenous L-phenylalanine and L-tyrosine in building flavonoids was carried out. Glyphosate reduced biosynthesis of flavonoids from both endogenous and exogenous substrates. However, with increasing concentrations of the herbicide the relative incorporation of exogenous L-phenylalanine into flavonoids showed a clear-cut increase notwithstanding that in absolute units their biosynthesis from that precursor declined. No similar relative rise of incorporation was observed in feeding exogenous L-tyrosine. A conclusion is drawn that Ltyrosine is not an alternative natural precursor of flavonoids in buckwheat seedlings. Possible mechanisms responsible for the labelling of flavonoids from the [14C]-L-tyrosine supplied exogenously are discussed.
