Liquid and solid-state infrared and liquid-state Raman spectra were obtained for meso-3.4-dibromohexane and meso-2,3,4,5-tetrahromohexane. The spectra show the dibromohexane to exist as two or more conformations in the neat liquid, including one that is centrosymmetric and one that is not centrosymmetric. The solid exists only as one of the two possible centrosymmetric conformations. This conformation probably has all six carbons coplanar. The tetrabromohexane is a solid at room temperature and there is only one conformer present. The lack of coincidence of Raman and infrared bands show that conformer to have a center of symmetry. No additional conformers were found in dilute carbon disulfide solution.
