The effect of polymer molecular weight and anionic character on selective separation of kaolinite from tribasic calcium phosphate (TCP) using hydrolyzed polyacrylamides in the presence of sodium hexametaphosphate dispersant was studied. Selectivity was observed to be strongly influenced by the molecular weight and anionicity of the flocculant. Optimum separation of kaolinite from tribasic calcium phosphate was obtained in the pH range from 7 to 10, with a polyacrylamide of 2 million molecular weight and anionicity of less than 7%. Adsorption of the polymer on kaolinite and tribasic calcium phosphate surfaces is attributed to electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions between the flocculant and the solid.
