A new anthelmintic, 3, 5-diiodo-3’-chloro-4’-(p-chlorophenoxy) salicylanilide, or rafoxanide, has been found highly effective in the treatment of Haemonchus contortus infections in sheep. The compound, given as a drench at 5 or 10 mg./kg., was highly effective when administered 8 days after experimental infection. When administered 22 days after experimental infection, a dosage of 10 mg./kg.—the only dosage tested—was highly effective. At either 8 or 22 days after infection, greater than 95% efficiency against a thiabendazole=tolerantHaemonchus (K-strain) was obtained with either 5 or 10 mg. of rafoxanide added to 44 mg. of thiabendazole per kg. of bodyweight. The new drug was fully compatible with thiabendazole.
