The standard enthalpies of formation for some Dysprosium alloys in the binary systems Dy-X (where X = C, Si, Ge, Sn, B) have been determined by direct synthesis calorimetry at 1473 ± 2 K. The following values of ΔHf0 in kJ mol−1 of atoms are reported: DyC2, −28.6 ± 2.0; DySi, −68.9 ± 2.0; DySi2, −54.6 ± 2.1; Dy5Si3, −64.0 ± 2.1; Dy5Ge3, −92.8 ± 2.3; Dy5Sn3, −75.1 ± 2.1; DyB2, −30.2 ± 1.3.The results are compared with some earlier experimental data derived from EMF or mass spectrometric measurements, with available calorimetric values for the corresponding compounds of some of the early lanthanide elements, and with predicted values from the semi-empirical model of Miedema and coworkers. The possible correlation between the enthalpies of formation and the systematic changes in the reduced melting temperatures, and the relative molar volumes of the compounds as suggested by Gschneidner are also tested.
