The mass spectra of the dimethyl esters of some aliphatic 3-methyl-α,ω-dicarboxylic acids show no molecular ion. The highest mass peak is due to α-cleavage with loss of a methoxy radical. Except for the lower homologue, loss of methanol is of low importance, but the metastable peak for the process is readily detected, and is thus of importance for the detection of the molecular ion. Except for the lower homologue, the base peak is due to cleavage at the site of branching with loss of ·CH2CO2CH3. Stable cyclic structures are proposed.
