Aquatic and terrestric humic material produce the same major products on chlorination, with the exception of n-fatty acids which were found mostly after the chlorination of terrestric material. The cyano-acids could be detected selectively after gas chromatography by their enhanced relative response between a nitrogen-phosphorous selective detector and a flame ionisation detector, or by mass spectrometry with chemical ionisation and isobutane as the reagent gas which gave M+1 and M+57 peaks, while the other products gave M+1 peaks only.
