The equilibria and kinetics of the reactions of [UO2]2+ with heptane-2,4,6-trione (H2hto), 1-phenylhexane- 1,3,5-trione (H2phto) and 1,5-diphenylpentane-l,3,5-trione (H2dppto) have been investigated in methanol-water (70:30 vol./vol.) solution at 25 °C and ionic strength 0.5 mol dm−3. A mechanism is proposed which accounts satisfactorily for the kinetic data. [UO2]2+ reacts with both the fully protonated and mono-anions of H2hto, H2phto and H2dppto with rate constants of 3.67 × 103, 5.55 × 108, 1.78 × 103, 4.73 × 108, 0.419 × 103 and 2.16 × 108 dm3 mol−1 s−1, respectively. An alternative formulation is also discussed.
