The preparation and characterization of CuMe2DBEnX2 (X = Cl,Br,NO3; Me2DBEn = N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-dibenzylethylenediamine); CuMe2DBEn(H2O)2SO4; [CuMe2DBEn(OH)]2(ClO4)2 and NiMe2DBEn(NO3)2 are reported. Reflectance spectra, magnetic susceptibilities, IR spectra, X-ray powder patterns and molar conductivities in DMF and 1,2-dichloroethane were used to deduce their structures. It is established from the IR spectra that, unlike tetrabenzylethylenediamine, Me2DBEn remained undegraded. All the complexes except [CuMe2DBEn(OH)]2(ClO4)2 are magnetically dilute, high-spin complexes. From its antiferromagnetic behavior and spectra, a binuclear hydroxy bridged structure is assigned to [CuMe2DBEn(OH)]2(ClO4)2.
