The USAF RT Nephanalysis, a real-time global cloud archive: Reviewed for climatological purposes

Real-time cloud information is produced by the USAF 3D/RT Nephanalysis at a resolution of ∼46 km and every 3 h for the globe. In this paper, the analysis procedure and the character of the resulting archives are described. 3D/RT Nephanalysis data have been utilized in several studies at global and regional scales and regional examples are shown here. Results from climatologically diverse areas indicate that the philosophy employed in the Nephanalysis design produces the optimum result for many purposes. The temporal and spatial resolution and extent of the data set make it of value in cloud climatological studies.
