On treatment with thallium (III) nitrate, trihydrate in acetonitrile solution, 3,4,6-tri-O-benzyl-D-glugal (5) gives the ring-contracted aldehyde (6) which has been converted into the showdemycin analogue (8); 2-(α-D-2′-deoxyribofuranosyl)maleimide (12) has similarly been prepared from (10) in satisfactory overall yield.
