The preparation of a solubilised 2,2′ : 6′,2″-terpyridine ligand is described together with the characterisation of an unexpected intermediate. Homoleptic complexes of the solubilised ligand 4′-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-2,2′ : 6′,2″-terpyridine, 1, with cobalt(II), cobalt(III), ruthenium(II), iron(II) and nickel(II) have been prepared. The ligand is slightly electron releasing and solubilises the complexes in organic media.
