Regioselectivity in metallation reactions of 2-(2′-naphthyl)pyridine: 1′-versus 3′-reactivity in mercuration and palladation reactions. Crystal structure of chloro(pyridine) [2-(2−pyridiny)naphthyl-C3,N]palladium

Regioselectivity is found to vary with the reagent in cyclometallation reactions of 2-(2′-naphthyl)pyridine. Mercuration produces a mixture of 1′- and 3′-naphthyl metallated species with the 1′-substituted material as the major product. Palladation results in clean 3′-naphthyl metallation, as confirmed by the crystal structure of the pyridine derivative chloro(pyridine)[2-(2′-pyridinyl)naphtyl-C3, N]palladium.
