The reactions of tungsten(V) chloride and bromide with several primary, secondary and tertiary aliphatic amines have been studied. Aminolysis of three tungsten-halogen bonds takes place with primary amines, whereas with secondary amines reduction followed by solvolysis occurs, giving products of empirical formulae WX2(NMe2)2,NHMe2 and WX3(NEt2), 2NHEt2. Tertiary amines also reduce tungsten to the quadrivalent state and complex salts are formed.
