The complexes, trans-Pt(NH3)4 Br22+ and trans-Pt(NH3)4Cl22+ have been electrochemically reduced to Pt(NH3)42+ at a platinum electrode. The electrochemical oxidation of Pt(NH3)42+ at a platinum electrode in aqueous bromide and chloride solutions produced trans-Pt(NH3)4Br22+ and trans-Pt(NH3)4Cl22+, respectively. Electrochemical oxidation of Pt(NH3)42+ did not occur in perchlorate, nitrate or fluoride solutions. A mechanism for the electrochemical oxidation has been suggested which is similar to that proposed, for the homogeneous oxidation of Pt(NH3)42+ by haloplatinum(IV) complexes.
