Bis(pentafluorophenyl)methylsilane (I) reacts with primary alkyllithium and Grignard reagents to give high yields of the pentafluorophenylmetallic species. The influence of steric factors upon the course of the reactions with a series of RLi and RMgX compounds including PhMgBr, i-PrMgBr and t-BuLi are considered.
