The metabolism of 3,6-dimethyloctanoic acid has been studied in guinea-pig kidney slices. The acid is initially degraded by an α-oxidation to 2,5-dimethylheptanoic acid, followed by a β-oxidation to 3-methylvaleric acid. In contrast to 3-methyl-butyric acid (isovaleric acid), 3-methylvaleric acid can be catabolized by an initial α-oxidation.This reaction sequence demonstrates that alternations between α- and /gb-oxidations can take place in the degradation of a branched chain fatty acid.
