Facile preparation of porous TiN-C microspheres as an efficient sulfur host for high performance lithium-sulfur battery

TiN is a promising host material for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery because of its good conductivity and strong binding ability to lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). Herein, porous TiN-C microspheres are synthesized through a facile spray drying method, followed by annealing treatment and subsequent removal of template. The as-obtained composite not only has high pore volume to accommodate sufficient sulfur, but also provide efficient suppression for “shuttle effect” due to strongly chemical confinement with LiPSs offered by polar TiN. When used in Li-S battery, the TiN-C/S cathode exhibits an initial reversible capacity of 989 mA h g−1 at 1 C and maintains 689 mA h g−1 after 700 cycles with a low capacity fading rate of 0.043% per cycle. Furthermore, the cathode delivers high capacity of 640 mA h g−1 and 544 mA h g−1 at 0.2 C after 400 cycles with high sulfur loadings of 3 mg cm−2 and 5 mg cm−2, respectively.
