Copper is the only element in the 3d series from which no dicyclopentadienyl compounds are known to date. Starting from cyclopentadienyllithium and copper(I) chloride, two novel organocuprates, [PPh4][CuCp2] (1) and [Li(12-crown-4)2][Cu2Cp3] · 2THF (2), were prepared. The solid-state structural features in the anions of 1 and 2 are hitherto unknown; η2-Cp coordination to the copper centres is observed by X-ray analysis. NMR spectroscopic analyses confirm the pronounced molecular dynamics in solution. Compounds of the general formula LiCu(C5R5)2 are powerful Cp-transfer reagents.
