Infra-red spectra of chromates (V) of calcium, strontium and barium

The infra-red spectra of the chromates (V) of calcium, strontium and barium have been measured from 2000 to 400 cm−1. The results, and those for the corresponding chromates (VI), are interpreted in terms of the site symmetry of the anion, and it is shown that, in the chromates (VI), the anion is not strongly perturbed. For the chromate (V) ion, the stretching force constant of the chromium (V)—oxygen bond is 4·94 mdyn/Å and the stretch—stretch interaction constant is 0·22 mdyn/Å. The effect of the non-bonding d electron of chromium (V) on the metal to oxygen bonding is discussed.
