Infrared spectra of ordered crystalline ethane and ETHANE-D6 (cas 1632-99-1)

Spectra are reported for crystalline ethane, ethane-d2 and their mutual solid solutions. The evidence indicates definitely at least two molecules per unit cell and that there cannot be a three-fold symmetry axis through the molecules. A structure for the solid is tentatively proposed; it is based on a structure distorted from hexagonal.The shifts of vibrations from gas to solid are remarkably small in most cases; unusually large shifts in the C2D6 molecule are believed due to some improper choices of band centers in the gas spectra.
