DyH3 has been investigated with the 161Dy Mössbauer resonance. For the first time it is shown that the electric field gradient at the rare earth nucleus in a hexagonal trihydride is non-axial. This verifies that the hydrogen atom contribution lowers the effective symmetry of the local crystal electric field.
