Vanadium pentafluoride dissolves in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride to give clear 3·3 M solutions at saturation. Raman spectra of such solution show that no ionization occurs, but that the vanadium pentafluoride is strongly solvated to give a species of unknown composition. The solutions are non-conducting. Reactions with hydrazinium difluoride give mixtures with the major product vanadium tetrafluoride and a minor component of an unstable dark brown solid which is probably hydrazinium (+2) hexafluorovanadate(IV). Vanadium tetrafluoride is stable at room temperature but begins to disproportionate above 150°. Single crystal studies shaw that it is orthorhombic with a = 9·35, b = 5·33 and c = 5·16 Å.
